Skiing – The Snow is Here!

Gore Mountain and the general North Creek/North River area has received 10-12″ of new snow in the recent storm!  With aggressive snowmaking and grooming, the mountain had an impressive amount of terrain open, even before the snow storm. Now, that’s just frosting on the cake!  Here is the latest report.  That’s the good news – and there is some opportunity for snow in the next week – but alas some days are sold out for advance purchase lift tickets. (All Gore Mt. lift tickets MUST be purchased online prior to arrival – CLICK HERE).  And do check back – even for day-of tickets on the website as there are cancellations with Covid cases rising.

So, What’s a skier to do?  There are other ski options in the area.  The Ski Bowl in North Creek is home to the Village Chair and the Gore Mt. Nordic Center.  Perhaps scale your day to twilight skiing on the Village Chair 3PM-8PM (and it’s only $26 for adults, $19 for Juniors and $10 for kids).  More Info CLICK HEREIf you’ve never tried Nordic skiing – the Ski Bowl is the perfect place to start!  With lights and snowmaking, rentals and lessons it’s great fun!  Ski Bowl Nordic Info CLICK HERE

Ski Bowl Nordic – Citizen Races – Wednesday, January 19th!  Registration will be on site this year before each race, beginning at 5:00 pm and running through 5:45 pm. Races will start at 6 pm each week. For the time being, registration will be outside under the open pavilion adjacent to the Lodge. Racers are allowed to use the Lodge, but must be masked.  Whether you decide to snowshoe, classic ski, or skate ski, and regardless of the number of loops you choose to race (1,2,3 or 4), you’re only competing against yourself week to week. The race loop will be held on our 1.2K Citizens’ Course, professionally groomed as always.  Raffle prizes to follow each race. Thanks to Becks Tavern, Cobble Creek Farm, and others for sponsoring our raffle! Also, thanks to Underdog Race Timing for being our timer again!

Weather and Outdoor Conditions

Well, winter is in full force here – new snow, cold temperatures and no warm-ups in sight!  The cold temperatures are allowing more and more terrain to open at Gore Mt., and preserving the snow surfaces to powder and packed powder!  Get out there!  Maybe a little too cold for you – some tips:  Ride the “Indoor” lift aka the Gondola.  Ski some of the “sun facing” chairs – The North Lift and the Summit will have that sun beaming on you for the ride back up!  Still too cold?  Try Cross Country Skiing.  Both Garnet Hill and Ski Bowl Nordic have groomed cross country ski trails, lessons and rentals.  Give it a try – the added activity will warm you up quickly – and of course skiing is skiing!  More Weather Info...CLICK HERE

North Creek Late Fall and Prelude to Winter!

North Creek Late Fall and Prelude to Winter!

North Creek – Late Fall and Prelude to Winter!

It won’t be long – Autumn colors will soon give way to winter white!  There is still plenty of time to enjoy late fall colors.  Get out and hike around, paddle on 13th Lake or enjoy some of the mountain biking trails at Garnet Hill or The Ski Bowl.  Ski season can begin anytime in November but Thanksgiving weekend (Nov 25-28, 2021) is usually the start of ski season. So, now is the time to plan your ski getaways, North Creek area winter vacations.

Late Fall Hike, Bike, Fishing

As more and more of the trees drop their leaves the annual dormancy sets up.   Trails becoming muddier, but the lack of leaves opens vistas that are usually obscured in the Summer.  It’s a great time to explore the area!  Look on our Hiking Guide for additional information.  Also – it is Big Game Hunting Season in the Adirondacks Oct. 23 – Dec. 5, 2021.  While accidents involving non hunters are very rare it’s a good idea to wear bright colors if you’re out hiking.  Mt. Bike trails can get challenging with leaf drop obscuring obstacles, but some trails at both Garnet Hill and the Ski Bowl have been cleared for Fall Mt. Biking.  Fishing Season is mostly closed but 13th Lake (and downstream outlet to 1st Bridge) remains open ’till Nov. 30 and the Hudson River and other streams have a new regulation that lets you fish Oct. 16 – March 31, artificial lures and catch and release only.

The Ski Scene in North Creek

Gore Mountain is the star of winter recreation in the North Creek area with almost 500 acres of skiable terrain on four distinct mountain summits.  With 14 lifts, 122 trails and 2500 ft vertical drop, Gore is BIG mountain skiing!  Gore couples all this great mountain with impressive snowmaking, grooming and all the skier services you would expect – lessons, rentals, sales, and lots of great on-mountain food service.  Lift Tickets, Season Passes and Frequent skier cards are available now – Visit Gore’s Ticket Info Here.

Backcountry Skiing – Gore is not the only ski venue in the area!  How about 114,000 acres and 75 miles of backcountry trails – most being great ski and snowshoe routes.  Those are the stats for the Siamese Ponds Wilderness Area with connections in North Creek, Bakers Mills and North River.  Visit our Backcountry Ski Page for more information.

Cross Country Skiers are not left out of the mix in the North Creek Area.  Garnet Hill Lodge maintains 55km of groomed Cross Country Ski Trails and offers rentals, ski lessons, ski sales and a charming mountain top lodge and restaurant.  Cross Country Skiers at Garnet Hill can also enjoy the Bobcat Cafe at The Outdoor Center during ski season with food, drinks and entertainment! Garnet Hill XC-Ski Info Here.  And not to be undone Gore has developed the North Creek Ski Bowl into an exciting cross country ski venue with lights and snowmaking on about 7km of trails.  More Ski Bowl Info Here.

Weather and Outdoor Conditions

North Creek This Week, Thru Aug. 22, 2021.  OK we’re saying the BIG Rain is over – at least for awhile.  The results?  Unprecedented Summer Rafting on the Upper Hudson – big water, warm water whitewater – get out there!  However, on the trails both hiking and mt. biking – it is muddy with some long stretches of standing water on a few trails.  This week’s weather looks stellar – with just slight chances for rain.  And a couple of sunny rain-free days will go a long ways toward drying out the trails.  Most all the signature activities and attractions do go rain or shine – do it all – Sky Rides at Gore Mt. (Thu-Sun) | Rafting (Tue-Thu-Sat-Sun), | RevRail (Daily)  Much More Weather Info HERE.

North Creek This Week!

It’s August and it’s vacation time!  There’s plenty to do – rain or shine – and at last report no one has melted due to hiking, boating, rafting, rail biking or more in the rain!  Weather apps are everywhere so it’s quite easy to keep track of and avoid the heaviest rain.  The best radar is on Weather Underground – see a link on our Weather Page.  And as has been the tune this Summer – rain is a GOOD thing for rafting raising the water levels in the Upper Hudson!  And rafting in the rain – well, you’re going to get wet anyway – get out there!  Raft trips are run on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.  Short trips from North River to North Creek are also run these days at 2-2:30 with tubing, kayaks, and family rafting.  Contact an Outfitter – for information and reservations – Directory Here.
New – Story Walk Event at the TOJ Library – Sat. Aug 21, 2-4PM  Info Here.

So It’s Raining!

RevRail and Gore Mt both are “rain or shine” activities so bring along a rain jacket or an umbrella!  This is just for regular rain, more dangerous thunder and lightening will delay or postpone rail biking trips and Gore’s skyrides.  For some real rainy day activities – visit Tannery Pond Community Center and Widlund Gallery (WED-FRI 10 am – 4pm, SAT 12Noon-4 pm), or visit some of North Creek’s great shops – Hudson River Trading Company, or Barkeater Chocolates.  Also visit our newest Art Studio and Gallery – H’art Gallery right on Main Street – awesome art, and The Depot Museum right next to RevRail, open Thur – Tue, 12 – 4, Closed on Wednesdays.  North Creek Farmer’s Market in Riverfront Park is also Rain or Shine – Thursday 2-6PM.
Further afield – The Adirondack Experience (formerly The Adirondack Museum) is Open every day, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, July 1 – Oct. 3.  The Museum is located in Blue Mt. Lake – Website Click Here.  Also the Wild Center at Tupper Lake is a great Rain Day Choice (Reservations Required) – it’s a good hour + away.  Wild Center Website Click Here.  One more great venue is the Adirondack Interpretive Center in Newcomb, with awesome exhibits and trails (Wed-Sun 10AM-5PM) – website.
