Artist Kate Hartley saw the large concrete wall on Main Street in North Creek as the perfect canvas for a very unique, very large-scale art project. Fast forward to today, and slowly, but surely, beautifully colored tiles and stones are advancing down Main Street in North Creek. They’re taking the shape of a raging river, tree-covered mountains, and a shining sun, highlighting the activities that make the region special, like whitewater rafting, skiing, and fishing. What was once a 180-foot stretch of bland, concrete wall is being transformed into “one of the largest pieces of public art in the North Country” thanks to the efforts and vision of Hartley and over 700 volunteers.
Chimney Mt. is a small mountain, only rising 2,700 ft. above sea level. It is a very popular mountain in the central Adirondacks. There are three factors that contribute to Chimney’s popularity. The first factor is that the summit offers 360 degree views (make sure you leave the chimney and proceed on to the true summit!). The second factor is that the trail to the summit is a steep class I trail that is just over a mile long, making the mountain accessible to many hikers of all ages. The third factor is a geologic oddity. Just below and before the summit there is a chimney formation. Along with the chimney there is a system of caves and rock crevasses. The chimney and other rock formations provide many opportunities for climbing scrambling and caving. The large cave is named Eagle Cave and probably requires some caving experience and specialized equipment, but intrepid explorers can enter the cave and descend one level. Better caves are a “walk-through” and these are the ICE CAVES on Chimney. Descend into the rift valley between the Chimney and the Summit and explore around! Crane Mountain is a challenging but rewarding loop hike with gorgeous views in all directions. The scenic pond offers a number of primitive camping sites, along with fishing and swimming. Explorers can also find a cave near the Putnam Farm Road trail junction. The summit trail features two ladders, a longer one and a shorter one, which are sturdy and are bolted to the rock, but may be too difficult to be climbed by dogs. The summit can also be reached from the other direction to avoid the ladders. To avoid the ladders hike to the pond first then on to the Summit. Peaked Mountain, elevation 2919 feet, is a modest sized mountain located north-west of Thirteenth Lake. It is a very steep sided summit, which gives great views of the surrounding forest, lakes, and mountains, including the high peaks. The trail head is at the parking lot for public access to Thirteenth Lake. The lot is reached by taking Thirteenth Lake road off of NY 28 north of North Creek.
