The Lone Ranger Rides Again!

The Adirondacks will once again be home to radio drama when the Lone Ranger saddles up with Tonto and takes to the radio theatre setting.

Gem*Radio Theatre will present “The Lone Ranger” as a radio drama August 27, 28, September 9 and 11, at four classic theaters in the Central Adirondacks. Under the direction of Hannah Jay, the audience will watch a theatrical production that is staged as a live radio broadcast for the mythical radio station of WADK.

Actors will step to the microphone to play multiple parts, while the ‘foley artist’ (sound effect masters) create sounds that will make you believe the man of justice is on the stage. Using only their imagination and found items (of coconuts, belt straps and other household items) the crew of Gem*Radio Theatre will take the audience back to the days when families sat around the Philco 90 to enjoy ‘theatre of the mind.’

The masked man believed: “That all things change but truth, and that truth alone, lives on forever.” Such is true for radio and virtue.
It will not be hard to imagine a fiery horse with a speed of light, a cloud of dust, and a hearty, “Hi Yo Silver” through this production of “The Lone Ranger”.

The show recreates the magic of radio (not to be confused with the many failed movie attempts). This will be going back to the source that mesmerized radio listeners in the 1930’s. The production will include several episodes of The Lone Ranger from the golden days of radio when good triumphed over evil. Included is the original first episode with “Bad Man’s Revenge” and “Footlights on the Frontier.”

With his faithful companion Tonto, the daring and resourceful masked rider leads the fight for law and order.  Return to radio station WADK and experience thrilling tales of the old west as the Lone Ranger fights for truth and justice. This family entertainment will appeal to the memories of grandma and grandpa as well as to the imagination of a child.
Many in the Adirondacks will remember the holiday performance of “It’s a Wonderful Life,” that the same cast of Adirondack characters presented last winter. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to see how a theatre can transform into the wild west.

It’s Whitewater Season 2016 – Upper Hudson River!

WinslowWebWell winter could have been better, but now it’s whitewater season on the Upper Hudson River!  Join us for the 59th Annual Whitewater Derby on May 7 & 8.  The Whitewater Derby (same day as the Kentucky Derby, get it?) began in the Spring soon after the last of the log drives ended on the Upper Hudson River.  That yearly Spring tradition (see a great timeline here), existed for over 100 years.
