Art Adventures in Ski Bowl Park 2024

Sandpaintings of Nature  Friday, July 12, 5-7 pm and Friday, August 9, 5-7 pm
Grunblatt Memorial Beach Pavilion, Ski Bowl Park
(Summary) In this free, all-ages program, we’ll examine sandpainting art. Participants will sketch an element of nature on wood and sprinkle various sands on their designs. We’ll end with a critique and photo!

(Long description)  Friends of Johnsburg Parks and Kate Hartley present “Art Adventures at Ski Bowl Park”! In this program, we’ll look at the art of sandpainting in the Southwestern US, and we’ll take a stroll to the beach and talk about the colors the earth provides in this part of the world: garnet and beach sand! Each participant will sketch an element of nature that they love, found in the area – bears, frogs, mountains, trails – on small wood pieces. Then, they’ll sprinkle garnet, beach, and colored sands onto painted glue shapes to complete their depictions of nature! Each student will be encouraged to create two projects (to enable drying time). Kate and a helper will circulate to give encouragement and guidance. The Adventure will end with the group gathering again at the pavilion for a “group critique and art show,” where we’ll admire the work created and snap a group photo!
The program is open to ALL ages and abilities (children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult).
Pre-register with Kate at [email protected]), but drop-ins are welcome.
This program is FREE and supported by LARAC/NYSCA.

Watercolors at the Waterfall (hike included)
Friday, July 26, 5-7 pm and Friday, August 23, 5-7 pm
Grunblatt Memorial Beach Pavilion, Ski Bowl Park

(Summary) Hike to a beautiful waterfall on Gore Mt., then create a watercolor painting of the area. Encouragement and guidance will given. We’ll end with a snack, critique, and group photo. Free for all ages.

(Long description) Kate Hartley and Friends of Johnsburg Parks bring you an art adventure that will take advantage of the fantastic trail system that begins at the TOJ Ski Bowl Park. We’ll hike up the Red and Schaefer Trails to a beautiful waterfall that tumbles down from Gore Mountain. There’s a lovely clearing where we can sit and/or set up easels to create paintings of the waterfall, trees, cliffs, and a slice of sky. Pastels will be used to complete the paintings and recapture the whites of the frothing water. Kate and a helper will circulate to give encouragement and guidance. Snack time and an informal “critique and art show” of the new masterpieces will occur on-site before the hike back down. We’ll stay at the pavilion, in case of rain. The group will gather again at the pavilion for a photo of their creations!
The program is open to ALL ages and abilities (children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult).
