North Creek History
Skiing left at the North Creek Ski Bowl 1950’s.
North Creek and the The Town of Johnsburg has a rich history. North Creek was the Northern Terminus for the railroad for many years, and just a crude dirt road went on to Indian Lake along present day Rt. 28. North Creek was the birthplace of New York Skiing with the “Ride Up – Slide Down” skiing of the 1930’s and the eventual first rope tow installation in the 1930’s on the Village Slopes (Ski Bowl). North Creek also is home to the Garnet Mining Industry with Barton Mines Corporation being the oldest continuous run Family mine in the Country. Log Drives were held on the Upper Hudson River for a hundred years or so ending in 1952 – supplanted by the modern day Whitewater Derby held every year the first full weekend in May.
